David Yang(Yang Te-Hui) is an artist who has maintained the essence of Chinese brush and ink painting and calligraphy from a foundation in these traditions through the Chinese Education he received as a child. Born in Human province, Southern China, he began his training in art when he was five years old, displaying early talent and winning school competitions for his painting and calligraphic work.

David cites the beauty of his childhood environment-the surrounding hills and mountains of his Hunan village-as having emerged as a significant influence on his painting in David studied painting for three years at the National Normal Universitythere. His teachers included such prominent instructors as Huang Chun-pi, Lin Yu-shan, Chang The-wen and Hu Nien-chu.

David participated in numerous exhibitions in Taiwan, and had work selected for exhibition by the National Art Museum. He continues to return to Taiwan regularly to show work there, and since the 1970’s also visits the United States to exhibit there at the invitation of various cultural institutes and galleries including Gallery America and the Minneapolis Oriental Institute. Whilst David has never considered himself a “professional painter”, his works are widely represented in museums and significant private collections.

Since retirement and settling in Australia he has taken up the life of the Chinese scholar, practising his calligraphy daily and painting for self-enlightenment, as well as for friend  as well as for friends.

The inherent grace of the brush is apparent in these works which reflect both the robustness and the fragility of nature, the elegance and the power of the written word – strength and serenity combined in the practise of these time-honoured artistic traditions.
